VPC’s WALL OF HONOR

Staff Sergeant Chauncy R. Mays was born on December 7, 1985 in Sulphur Springs, Texas. He enlisted in the Army on June 17, 2004 and began his career as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician with the 763rd EOD Company at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. While assigned to the 763rd EOD Company, Staff Sergeant Mays completed a six-month deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in August of 2006, and a 14-month deployment in June of 2008. He deployed to Afghanistan in November 2010 as an EOD Team Leader with the 705th EOD Company of Fort Polk, Louisiana in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Staff Sergeant Mays’ awards and decorations include three Bronze Star Medals, Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, three Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Combat Action Badge, Senior EOD Badge, and Driver’s Badge.
Staff Sergeant Mays is survived by his wife Katherine, daughters Kiley and Chesnee, and parents Thomas Mays and Alyson Rodgers.

An Okinawa-based Marine explosive ordnance disposal officer was killed Wednesday June 10, 2009 in Afghanistan while on his sixth combat tour supporting operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, the military announced.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Ricky L. Richardson, 33, of Franklin, Mo., died while supporting combat operations in the Farah province, according to a news release.
Richardson arrived on Okinawa in July 2007 and was assigned to the 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force. He deployed to Afghanistan in February for his sixth combat tour, the release said.
Relatives told local television station KTVI-TV in St. Louis that Richardson was killed while dismantling bombs.
Family member Theresa Hulsey of Sullivan, Mo., told St. Louis television station KSDK that Richardson was a passionate and dedicated Marine. “Even when he wasn’t on tour, when he was home, he was always saying, ‘I need to get back over there. There’s a lot I could be doing,’ ” Hulsey said, according to a report on the station’s Web site.
Family also told the station that Richardson is survived by a wife and an 8-year-old son.
Richardson joined the Marine Corps in 1996. He was promoted to chief warrant officer 2 in August.
