'I always feel good': Arkansas' oldest living WWII veteran celebrates 105th birthday.

Bell now lives at the DeWitt Nursing Home and Hospital where his family traveled on Friday to celebrate his 105th birthday. This milestone celebration makes him Arkansas' longest living veteran that served in World War II.

Bell's children described him as many things - one being a great father.

"He was a good father and a good husband," said Eddie Bell, Jr., Claude's oldest son. "He took care of us."

"He really worked hard," said Keith Bell, Claude's youngest son. "He farmed rice for 40 years or something and how he is in the physical condition he is now just amazes me."

Claude's daughter, Shirley Bell Thrash, also talked about how hard of a worker her dad was.

As the family tree grows, new generations have become fascinated with their Claude's story.

"He was an Army medic during World War II. He did not really talk about that but he was stationed in England, France, and Belgium," said grandson Shawn Bell. "I think that is really cool just to imagine what he saw on the battlefield. We cannot comprehend that today."

Claude was inducted into the Army in 1942.

He completed basic training at Camp Robinson in North Little Rock and became a surgical technician.

After serving, Claude received the Victory Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and two Overseas Service Bars.

Even though the age difference is almost 100 years apart, Claude's great-grandson Gabe Thrash has gotten to make some memories.

"I have made a lot of memories with him the years that I have been alive," said 10-year-old Gabe. "There was this one time in this room, I think it might have been just last year, he was chasing me around here in his wheelchair."

Gabe said he wants to be like his great-grandfather when he grows up.

"I mean he is the oldest living veteran in Arkansas," Gabe said. "That is pretty cool."

Gabe said he makes sure to tell his great-grandfather that he loves him whenever he sees him.
When nurses asked Claude if he felt good, his response was: "I always feel good."
Shirley said her father always talked about making it to 100-years-old.

When Sheila’s only brother, SSG Mark “Doc” Wells, 74th EOD, was serving in Afghanistan and killed by an IED, leaving behind a wife and two young children, she truly felt and understood the loss and the depth of the needs of others who have lost someone they love. Sheila and her brother had always had friendly cooking competitions and were both bakers at heart. Her chicken pot pie was his favorite and he’d call her countless times for the recipe. Although her brother wasn’t able to return home, she had the desire to help the soldiers who did. So in 2012, she started a small meal planning company with the idea that the heart of everything we did, we would be supporting veterans and widows and orphans of veterans! This little startup has grown up to become Victory Pie Company. Just as the “Victory Gardens” of World War II were a community-inspired effort to help support our troops, Victory Pie Company gives a portion of all profits to supporting various veteran organizations including EOD Warrior’s Foundation, Snowball Express, and Camp Hope. Each pie is crafted by hand, from scratch with love for our cause. Thank you for supporting the men and women who serve our country and for supporting small businesses by sharing a table with us.

Sergeant James G. Johnston, an 89D Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician, assigned to 704th Ordnance Company (EOD), 79th Ordnance Battalion (EOD), died June 25, 2019, as a result of wounds he sustained while engaged in combat operations in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan.
SGT Johnston was born in Trumansburg, New York on September 16, 1994. He enlisted in the United States Army in July 2013, as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician.
After completing Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training, SGT Johnston was assigned to 129TH OD CO (EOD) located at Joint Base Lewis-McCord, Washington, as an EOD Specialist. In October 2016, SGT Johnston was assigned to the 707TH OD CO (EOD) at Joint Base Lewis-McCord, Washington. Then in January of 2018, SGT Johnston was assigned to the 718TH OD CO (EOD) at Camp Humphreys, South Korea. Followed in February 2019 by his assignment to 704TH OD CO (EOD) Company at Fort Hood, Texas. While assigned to the 704TH OD CO (EOD) Company, SGT Johnston held the EOD Team Member and EOD Team Sergeant positions.
In March 2019, SGT Johnston deployed to Afghanistan with the 704TH OD CO (EOD) Company as an EOD Technician in Support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.
SGT Johnston’s military education consists of the Field Sanitation Course, Combat Lifesaver’s Course, CREW Master Gunner Course and EOD School.
SGT Johnston’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Meritorious Service Metal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with One Campaign Star, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Korean Dense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge, and the Senior EOD Badge.
